Electric Bassett win 9 goal thriller

Following Bassett's thumping 4-1 home win last week the team continued their fine form winning a pulsating game away 5-4 to a highly rated Wanborough Junior FC.

Undeterred Bassett resumed their excellent attacking play and created good chances for striker Alex greenouff. After being foiled twice in quick succession by Oisin, the excellent Wanborough 'keeper Greenouff soon equalised with a left footed lob before giving Bassett the lead with a fierce right footed drive giving the Wanborough 'keeper no chance

Wanborough reacted well and almost straight from the kick-off were able to regain the lead with a well worked goal to equalise.

Bassett pushed forward eager to regain the lead before half-time. Kyle Lillis, Ollie Maslin and Henry Greenouff all had excellent shots from distance but could not beat the goalkeeper.

As half-time approached the game arguably changed on a critical moment. The Wanborough striker was adjudged to have been fouled in the area. The resulting penalty save, a world-class one handed stop from highly rated goal keeper Charlie Davis kept the scores level.

Taking full advantage of the moment of Davis brilliance Bassett were then able to regain the lead with Alex Greenouff feeding predatory striker Charlie Booker to calmly give Bassett the half-time lead.

With a slender one goal lead Bassett faced a literal uphill battle on the uneven Wanborough pitch. A brilliant Ewan McGeachie clearance kept Bassett ahead and prevented an almost certain goal. Wanborough did equalise though following a strike from distance

Aided by the slope Wanborough pushed to take the lead which they did shortly after with another well worked goal.

Trailing with 20 minutes left it was not looking good for Bassett Blues. However buoyed by the introduction of hard tackling Jasper Bianco Bassett started to regain control. Alex Greenouff was able to regain the lead with a shot which looped over the Wanborough 'keeper before spotting the keeper out of position to drive the ball past to claim his fourth of the game.

Despite having the lead the game was still finely balanced. Booker had a goal disallowed and Toby Buck hit an exquisite strike from distance which narrowly missed.

Disaster nearly struck in the final minutes when Henry Greenouff was briefly adjudged to have handballed in the area before the referee corrected his mistake and awarded a corner.

The referees final whistle was greeted by cheers from the exuberant away supporters who will have made the trip home down the M4 delighted with the three points.

Oliver Maslin was awarded the parents man of the match half-way through the second half following his combative performance. Coaches man of the match was Jasper Bianco the extra bite he brought to the Bassett midfield in the second half

Speaking after the game Wanborough Manager Ian Luckhurst said: 'I thought Bassett were a really strong team but we were disappointed not to have got a point from the game.'

Next up is another tough away game to Highworth Town Juniors in the Lague Cup .
