02 Oct 2011 - Shaw 'A' (A)

With the hottest October day ever, being forecast, a midday kickoff was probably not ideal for a trip to Shaw.

Bassett started quickly and were playing some good passing football. Joe Martin in the centre midfield position was commanding the game. After a great run and passing move between Jack and James Y, Bassett won a corner. James Y knocked a good ball in, to have it cleared back to him, and finding space fired the ball back across the penalty area, to see it take a deflection and go past the helpless Shaw goalkeeper. 1-0.

With Bassett keeping the pressure on, Shaw's opportunities were mainly from quick counter attacking, which they did very well, but Nat, Charlie in defence and James T in goal were solid and quickly snuffed out any attacks. Following another good passing move Billy was unlucky when his shot was just wide. Keeping the pressure on and working hard was eventually rewarded, as Jack went on a great run and finished it with a good pass into Billy, who slotted the ball past the Shaw keeper 2-0.

With the heat taking it's toll Chas was introduced and again, as is becoming the norm, ran himself into the ground for the team.

But as sometime times happens when a team has most of the play, Bassett went to sleep a bit and left the Shaw striker on his own in our penalty area, and with good work from their midfield breaking up play, the ball found it's way through and the "lone" striker scored.

Bassett however responded as they should have and soon worked the ball to Joe whose shot was well saved by Shaw's keeper, the resulting corner seeing a great strike from Jack narrowly missing the target.

2-1 at half time. The 2nd half saw a change of striker, Jack going up top and Billy being asked to play in midfield.

Bassett now working well down the wings as the centre was closed off by Shaw's midfield. James and Billy out wide supported by Nat and Charlie were getting more and more success and with Jack working tirelessly despite having 2 defenders against him most of the time, it wasn't long before Bassett scored again. Jack's shot rebounding to Billy who found the back of the net. 3-1.

The remainder of the match was end to end stuff, but again Bassett's defence kept Shaw out, Chas was really unlucky to see his shot go narrowly wide after some great link up passing with Charlie. Jack had a couple more good chances, which were only thwarted by a Shaw keeper in excellent form.

So the match ended 3-1 to Bassett. A well deserved victory against one of the top teams in the league, well done all!
