Sunday 15th November 2009 - FC Abbeymeads 'B' (A)

After two days of solid rain, it was nice to turn up to the pitch at Lydiard Park with the sun shining and the pitch not waterlogged as I feared it would be. All the boys were ready and waiting and raring to go, with a fantastic war cry from the lads before the start of the match. All the boys were there; bar Archie who is unwell at the moment – get well soon Archie.

The whistle blows and the boys are gunning for the Abbeymead goal. Some great moves from the lads and good control considering the pitch is making the ball bouncy and stopping the ball moving any great distance. Ryan gives a good attempt at goal which their keeper has to save and it's not long before it is our defence of Cade and Matt C are being brought into play. Methinks this is going be the same for the remainder of the match, and how true it turns out to be.

It was, however, great linkage of passing from the lads the ball was moved up the pitch for Ryan to kick the ball at an awkward angle which crept under their keeper's legs, to cross the line and the goal was given. Yippee 1-0 to us. It seemed that there was no stopping us and we kept pressing the opposition who seemed to be unsure how to tackle with Harry, Cameron and George having good attempts at goal, but were unsuccessful with some good saves by their keeper. It was however Abbeymead lads who scored the next goal and we were even-stevens.

This typified the first half with some great pressing moves from our lads, trying tirelessly to break the opposition defences and getting that elusive goal, some great corners taken and fantastic tackling by all, especially the defence. Joe had a great header in front of their goal, it's a shame it went into the hands of their keeper. The first half ended 1-1, a fair result.

Second half started similar to the start, our boys up for it with a great run from Cameron, but we were caught out on a break from the opposition and it was they who scored the next goal. Our heads didn't go down and we kept fighting, with some great play from Hadley and good free kicks from George – good long boot on you George. But our lads were tiring and the opposition was very strong and physical and we had to fight for the ball and it was they who scored the next goal. For the next five minutes our lads were overwhelmed by the opposition as they were able to score another 3 goals. Joe in a tackle was injured and Nige came on and became the human stretcher and carried Joe off. But our boys didn't give up and carried on fighting and we were rewarded with a goal from Harry to leave the final score 2-6.
