Sunday 13th September 2009 - Liden Community 'A' (A)

Wootton Bassett under 9A's today held their own throughout pretty much the whole game. In fact they dominated most of it!! They have shown these last two games what a cracking team they can be especially considering that they have not played together all that long. I think that our lads were feeling confident (but not over confident) after their win last week which showed in their determination to get the ball throughout most of the game. There were lots of excellent passes and thought put into their play. Some of the lads were tiring towards the end but with good cause. There were also a couple of injuries through the game – Cade and Cameron both took knocks and needed to come off to recover.

Harrison scored a fantastic goal for us today (and that's now 2 goals in 2 games – not sure if a certain someone (Colin) needs reminding of what he said on a night out just recently about paying him for every goal he scored – I have had inside manager info – we may need to have a whip round as otherwise he may be too poor to buy himself a pint by the end of the season!!!)

On a more serious note and unfortunate for Wootton Bassett shortly after our goal the opposition equalized. This was due to a penalty given to Liden for an accidental hand ball. Although Matthew did have a fair crack at saving it – he was dancing on his toes ready to put the Liden lad off but through no fault of his own, and due to the force of the kick, the ball was just out of his grasp. This game was not short of action as further on in the game Bassett were also then given a penalty, again through an accidental hand ball. George took the task but again unfortunately for him and our lads, he kicked it just over the bar!! A strong boot but just over the mark. There was action on and off of the pitch from enthusiastic parents and supporters! Again there were high and excitable spirits over our goal today, leaping for those clouds. We really need to get a camcorder at one of these games – not to see the lads (although that would be useful to the team) but to show Ralph and Nige just how enthusiastic us parents can be!! There were happy and not so happy spectators during the game and some differing opinions on the referee but that's part and parcel of football – players, managers and referees will always come under fire at some point.

Back to 'that penalty' – Some of the parent crowd had some misgivings about the penalty given to Liden, and think that we should have won the game today and possibly would have done especially considering how well our lads played as a team today!! The performance from the team so far this season has been excellent (and the managers have been pretty good too). Today though the best team deserved to win and that was our Bassett lads!! I know that some may have felt a little of disappointment that we did not win but we got a draw and let's remember it's not a loss, so again well done to the boys – they have shown us what they can do from just being together as a team over the summer with 2 new coaches and a lot of positive training and encouragement (I know I said this last time but again I heard lots of positive encouragement from Nige and Ralph which makes a huge difference to our boys). Keep it up Bassett – come on you Blues!!!
