Sunday 6th September 2009 - Wroughton Youth (H)

We were 1-0 down in the first half after several minutes but this didn't dishearten Wootton Bassett under 9's. They were consistent throughout both halves – fighting for the ball with lots of energetic play too! Being 1-0 down didn't last long though as we equalised shortly after thanks to Harrison. The Wroughton Goalie had kicked it out from quite wide of the goal and Harry controlled it and hit it back in. It may have looked to some like a casual kick but it was highly focused – it wasn't rushed but calculated and right on target. If this shot had been wellied and rushed in, it may not have had the same impact. This was followed by a triumphant goal for Bassett by George. This was a Freekick given from way out from the goal. George belted it straight into the goal, at the surprise of the opposition!!

There were a couple of minor injuries during the game; Ryan early on and Joe who took a nasty ball to the back in the second half. Both boys came fighting back to help win the game.

The team played brilliantly on Sunday and were absolutely delighted with a 2-1 win against Wroughton. The only unfortunate thing for us, if you can call it that, was the amount of times our strikers were on target but only just missed, this was when the ball kept on hitting that wroughton post, I think the number was 6 in all, according to our lads (just think of the score if some of those had gone in). This goes to show though that neither half was dominated by the opposition – Bassett were fighting for the ball and focused throughout!!

The parents were in full fantastic supporting form on Sunday too. There was no negative instruction, but instead loads of positive encouragement. From the sidelines some parents were almost touching the clouds through jumping for joy and excitement (mentioning no names – you know who you are). The look on the lads faces when we scored said it all too and from talking to the manager most of the lads really enjoyed the game and had a fantastic time.

Congratulations to the boys and bravo to the manager too for all your encouragement and positive energy. During the game I heard lots of positive comments, reassurance and confidence boosting from Nige and the look on his face after the game, just like the boys, said it all!!

The penalties were all successful in my eyes, even the ones that didn't quite hit the target. What a great start to the season, all the boys did brilliantly. All the parents did brilliantly too, getting the lads there on time and prepared. Even the weather was on our side being dry and sunny!! Well done to all!!!
