Bassett fall to narrow defeat at Highworth

Today's game saw us travel across town to play Highworth – who at the end of November beat us 7-1.

With confidence in the team running a little higher after narrowly missing out on winning last week, hopes were of a repeat performance, and the boys didn't let us down

The game started well with Highworth having the advantage in the first half of playing downhill, the starting line up made up this week of Andy in goal, defence of JD and Martin, ,midfield of Callum and Josh, and Danny and George up front began well, battling hard for the ball and both teams saw chances come and go, from one of the Bassett chances we were unfortunate to see the ball cleared of the line. This gave us a bit of a boost and Highworth a shock, they were not going to walk over us this time. A corner well taken by Josh saw the ball go just wide again, with another goal kick by Andy seeing Danny run on to it saw us break the dead-lock with another goal to add to his tally this season.

Highworth fought back and were soon level when bad marking in Defence led them to their equaliser.

With Martin off and Miles back, we were determined not to do our usual of dropping the heads as soon as the opposition drew level, and we were unfortunate not to go two one down but for a fantastic goal line clearance by George. With Josh off and Louis bought on we continued to battle hard till half time to go into the break even.

Second half with Bassett now having the advantage of running down-hill the game was evenly matched, Callum came off with Josh back on to bolster the attack we had our chances but just couldn't find the back of the net again, a goal kick by Andy, knocked on by George led to a good run by Danny which saw him sandwiched between two Highworth defenders and hit the ball just wide, the parents did notice that every time Danny had the ball, suddenly at least two Highworth players were surrounding him, showing what a danger he was proving to be.

Good play by Miles – solid as ever – saw the ball pass down the line to George who knocked the ball on to Danny just too long for him to run on to it. With another change made by Andy, this time saw Louis off and Martin back on, we continued to pressure the Highworth goal. However, the equal score-line was not to remain with the midfield losing concerntration, Highworth managed to shoot at the goal, which saw the ball knocked in off the goal post and in.

Not to be defeated we continued to pressure and with a goal kick by Andy, knock on by Josh to George saw Martin slow to react to the ball, another shot by Miles saw the ball just over. With Highworth wanting to try to seal the victory they continued to attack our goal, but good tackling by JD saw the ball just over the bar.

When the final whistle came, it bought an end to an entertaining match, any side could have snatched the victory and we were unlucky once again not to get a point let alone three for the second consecutive week.

Keep battling boys – it'll come good at the end.
