Bassett get off to a shaky start

Welcome back to the new season & what a start. Having not played as a 7 a-side team since the middle of May and also having lost a few key players over the summer we started our under 10 campaign home against FC Abbey Meads, who having played in numerous tournaments over the summer – managing to win the majority of them. I knew this was going to be a hard start.

The game started well with both sides battling hard, with Frazer having a very good first game in goal for us – pulling off a couple of good saves when being called upon. The defence started as Miles and Louis, with midfield as JD, Callum and George Dow – upfront was Josh and on our subs bench was Ashley making his debut. First half saw some excellent play by George on the wing, who battled well and puffed hard. Miles also played well and came out the winner from some strong tackling from the opposition. Towards the end of the half Louis was bought off and Ashley put into defence, with Ashley not having played in competitive games before we have to see over the coming weeks the best place for him.

The first half ended at no score which was fantastic for us – and well deserved.

With changes made at half time Callum was brought off, and the defence was now made up of Miles and Louis, JD and George were midfielders and Ashley was now put upfront with Josh to see if we could sneak one in. And for the first 10 minutes this seemed a possibility – we were playing well, clearing well and defending well, then it all unfortunately started going wrong. Whether it was the fact that we hadn't played for so long, or the lack of subs today I don't know but some mishaps in defence and poor clearances lead to two goals by FC Abbey Meads in very quick succession – the boys heads at this point seemed to drop very quickly – which was unfortunate. We must remember to continue to give 100% no matter what the score is.

As the game progressed we did try to fight back with Callum brought back on to try to shore up the defence. Louis was moved upfront, with Ashley off – FC Abbey Meads again made their way through our tired defence to score two more again in quite quick succession.

When the final whistle eventually came the boys came off the field exhausted – there are some good things to take away from this game which hopefully we can build upon in the coming weeks.

Man of the Match – George Dow
