Bassett battle hard to get first win – but to no avail

Todays game saw Fairford travel to us at Rylands Way for a windblown game, and with them just above us in the league a win today would see us come off bottom spot - but it was not to be.

The game started frantically with both sides battling for the breakthrough – with Andy jnr in goal (chunk), and George D & Martin just infront of him in defence, Callum, JD & Danny in midfield and Josh completing the starting line up, we fought hard but it was Fairford who managed to get the break through. Bassett being warned at the beginning that if they were to go a goal behind, not to give up so easily as has been the case in previous weeks, Danny broke free and found the back of the net - 1-1. Kick off again and we soon found ourselves scarily 2-1 up again, Danny being the scorer. With spirits running high, Fairford went on the attack and we were unfortunate to find ourselves drawing at 2-2 when they fired towards the net and Chunk just couldn't keep the ball out, we soon found ourselves 3-2 down with bad marking from a corner.

With Callum bought off and Louis on, we went in search of an equaliser again and with good play this time by George Dow who'd swapped places with JD , Danny again managed to find the back of the net. We then gifted Fairford another goal, again with bad marking from a corner ball. More changes and this time Callum back on to try to shore up the defence to give Martin a breather, a good free kick by JD found Danny hovering on the edge of the box and he was able to tap the ball into the open goal. We were then unluck when a good 1,2 play by George & Josh left Danny to shoot just wide. The end of the first half came with us drawing 4-4.

With drinks taken on and a pep talk by Andy the boys knew what they had to do – more of the same. The second half also saw a change of keeper for us with George D put in goal to allow Chunk the chance to have a go on pitch. But within minutes of the second half starting and before George had even had chance to settle in goal, Fairford broke and went through the defence of Callum and JD far too easily and found the back of the net - they took the lead once more.

With Bassett again playing catch up - the second half didn't seem as manic as the first with some good tackling going in and some excellent saves by George. A resulting goal kick from George which found its way past the half way line found Danny on the end and a knock on to Josh who was unlucky to see the ball go just wide. As time ticked on the parents were wondering if a point could be snatched, and another excellent run by Danny found the back of the net for his 5th of the day, he even managed to get a kick in the head for his troubles today – I think Fairford thought this may be the only way they could contain him.

As time ticked on we thought we may be getting our second point of the season and it would have been well earned but then disaster struck and with Fairford running through the tired legs of the Bassett boys they found the back of the net once more to rob us of a much deserved point, and to take the lead 6-5. With Ashley bought on to see if we salvage a point it was not to be.

Overall a much better performance from the boys which just goes to show – not to give up at the first goal scored against us. Well done.
