Bassett fight for it but get nothing

Today saw us on our travels to Fairford, who when we played them nearly a year ago we came away 4 – 1 winners. Today, unfortunately, it was not to be repeated.

The game started well with both sides battling hard, with a change in goal for the first half with George Dow, we started with Callum and Miles in defence, JD, Frazer and Danny in midfield and Josh up front. We did create some chances but we still do have players who tend to not only want to beat one player but the rest of the team on their own. They have to remember to not only look up but pass the ball when the need arises if it looks a better option.

Fairford did start attacking our defence a few too many times, and a lot of time Callum was found at the back on his own, as Miles had cleared the ball but then moved on up to midfield, leaving JD to drop back a lot of the time which was good covering. A free kick by Fraser went just wide, and a corner by Josh again went just wide of the post.

The break in score-line came when the Fairford side went on the attack down the wing managed to cross the ball over and found an unmarked player in the box who slotted the ball home. We soon found ourselves two nil down with a mix up in defence. The first half ended and it was time to re-group.

With changes made at half-time, Frazer was now put back in goal, Louis on for Callum in defence, Josh was pushed out to the wing to see if his excellent crosses could muster a goal from somewhere, and George was put up front.

We did start playing some good football, and creating more chances, and it was from an excellent corner by Josh again that the previous Wednesday–s training paid off when George Dow headed the ball into the back of the net.

With us now only two one down now we did feel as if a point could have been got and went on the hunt for another goal. With Louis– ankle playing up, Ashley came on to help out in defence with JD. When goal kicks from Fraser usually getting just past the half way line and then the bounce of the ball we were unlucky not to get the equaliser we deserved, but Fairford did go on the counter attack and a hit by a player from just inside our area went over the whole of the team and passed the outstretched arms of Fraser.

With heads down we continued to play, but did start to loose our shape a bit, Miles came off and Callum put back in defence, who done well marking the tall blond no.10 who seemed to be causing us many problems. With George off and Miles put up front, did try to get back into the game but then a mix up in defence between Callum, Ashley and Fraser and a Fairford player in the centre of them they killed the game off when the ball hit the back of the net to make it the final score line of 4-1.

Man of the Match – Josh Dack – for his attitude and 100% trying.
