Wootton Bassett boss Paul Burke insists Cricklade "got out of jail" on Saturday after Adam Whitefield scored a fortuitous winner in second half stoppage time.
Bassett clawed their way back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2, only to have their hearts broken by Whitefield's late strike.
Said Burke: "The lad (Whitefield) didn't admit it afterwards, but I think it was a cross rather than a shot.
"If you'd have asked the neutral, they would tell you we should have been out of sight at half-time.
"But that's just the story of our season really. I reckon I must have run over a black cat."
After a goalless first half, the supporters saw the net bulge five times in an exciting second period.
Ed Jose fired Cricklade ahead on the hour mark and Ben Carter made it 2-0 to the home side five minutes later.
Bassett looked to have rescued a point thanks to strikes from Scott Large and Andy White, before Whitefield struck a late blow for the hosts.
