Win in opener but not all plain sailing

The girls could not have asked for a better result for their first ever game in a league but it wasn′t all plain sailing with Swindon Badgers putting them under pressure at times. Badgers started from the centre spot and surged forward only to be broken down by some great defending by the back two of Emma and Felicity who then send the ball up field and on the break Emily scored making it 1-0. Badgers came back at the girls and both teams were unlucky not to score again quickly, although a few corners were cleared. Bassett continued the pressure and constantly broke down the Badgers defence and Emily was denied by the post. Rebecca was then substituted by Sophie Jones. Bassett came out of their next corner the victors as a goal mouth scramble resulted in Emily slotting the ball into the Badgers net making it 2-0. Charlotte was substituted by Adrienne. Badgers attacked again and were only stopped due to some outstanding tackles by Felicity who cleared the ball but unfortunately Emma has to come off injured and was replaced by Rosie. Some excellent goal keeping by Sarah kept Bassett in the game and Sophie Knight broke through Badgers defence to make it 3-0 at half time.

The second half started and both teams came out and tackled hard. The game was flowing from end to end and after several chances at both ends and some excellent defending by all, Bassett′s next goal came again from Sophie K who then, from the start of the centre, ran forward with Emily and after a couple of shots planted another in the net making the final score 5-0. Well done girls - great to see and watch out Trowbridge next week.

Man of the Match was given to Sophie Knight who battled on right through to the end.
