The new North Wilts Youth Football League kicked off this weekend, with three of Royal Wootton Bassett Town's four competitive teams taking to the pitch for their opening fixtures of the season.
It was an exciting start for Bassett, with the teams looking to begin their campaigns positively and put their hard work from pre-season into action.
The Under 17 Girls opened their season with an exciting first home game against Paulton Rovers, narrowly losing 7–6 in a thrilling encounter.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives, with the girls showing fantastic energy, determination and commitment throughout. They created numerous chances and never gave up. Hannah was fantastic in goal, making some excellent saves.
Daisy L and Freya showed great strength and energy in midfield, while Eleanor and Amelie were brilliant when they came out and defended with confidence. Daisy B also got onto the scoresheet.
However Bassett's Player of the Match, Esme, produced an outstanding performance, scoring an incredible five goals! Her strength, power and finishing were fantastic. A huge well done to the whole team — plenty to be proud of!
The Under 14 Girls had a difficult start to the season, losing 5-1 against FC Abbey Meads Blue. After some late changes, a huge thank you went to Georgia G, Chloe, Ruby and Tia for stepping up in goal.
The Girls started strongly and competed well, with Christina finishing brilliantly from Emily's pull-back after a lovely pass from Lauren to bring it back to 2-1. Abbey Meads added three more goals, but the girls continued to work hard despite the heat and fatigue.
Player of the Match was Felicity, who showed fantastic composure, energy and passing in midfield. Despite the result, every girl kept going and never gave up. There were plenty of positives to take forward.
The Under 12 Girls opened their season with a competitive fixture against Tyrone Mings Storms, losing 2–0.
It was a closely fought game, with both teams working hard throughout. The girls showed plenty of determination as they adapted to nine-a-side football for the first time.
Tyrone Mings secured the win with two goals, but there were plenty of positives for Bassett to take from the performance.
The girls continued to work hard and showed a positive attitude throughout. The match provided valuable experience and highlighted areas to develop as the season progresses.
Sadly, the Under 15s' opening fixture at Swindon Spitfires was postponed, with the away game at Buckhurst Fields called off due to an unplayable pitch. We look forward to seeing them get their season underway very soon.
