Closely Contested

The Wiltshire Gazette, Thursday 31st October 1946

In the Second Round of the Amateur Cup at Wootton Bassett, Chippenham went under by 4-3 after a closely contested game.

Daggs opened the scoring for the visitors and Pearce equalised shortly after, but Chippenham took the lead again in a few minutes. Hunt brought the scores level, but just before the interval Pearce gave Wootton Bassett the lead.

In the second half Pearce scored for the home side and Daggs for the visitors.

The Evening Advertiser, Monday 28th October 1946

Wootton Bassett, Swindon Town's nursery club, remain to carry the Wiltshire banner in the FA Amateur Cup competition.

Having defeated Dilton and Melksham in previous rounds, they took on the might of Chippenham Town on Saturday and defeated the Western League representatives by the odd goal in seven.

It was a meritorious achievement, especially as Chippenham took the lead through Daggs after only seven minutes, and went further ahead at the end of a quarter of an hour, Colborne netting.

Wootton Bassett then came into the limelight and Pearce (outside-left), who recently had the satisfaction of scoring in his first appearance for Swindon's Combination side, reduced the arrears with a great shot. Hunt equalised, and Pearce put the home side in first before the interval.

In the second half, Pearce got the fourth for Wootton Bassett and Daggs a third for Chippenham.
