Quickfire double inflicts derby defeat

Grist Environmental Ground, Monday 31st August 2026

Two goals in a five minute second half spell saw Devizes Town claim the derby spoils against Royal Wootton Bassett Town as Jonny Aitkenhead's side's frustrating start to the campaign continued.

Suspensions and unavailability meant the Bassett boss was forced to shuffle his pack again. And it was a youthful side that took the field against last season's Western League Division One champions with centre half Joey Warren and forward Jacob Ryan both handed their first starts for the Men's First Team.

While they acquitted themselves well, it was an otherwise similar story for Bassett who again lacked a creative edge in front of goal.

The teams were deadlocked at half time though with Devizes unable to convert their pressure into goals in the opening period.

However, ten minutes into the second half the prolific Dan Demkiv produced a well taken solo goal to grab the game's first goal, steering beyond Josh Sawyer into the top corner.

And four minutes later Jay Walters netted a fine finish of his own to put Devizes firmly in command, with Bassett unable to generate a response.

The result sees Bassett finish the first month of the season still in search of their first win, with only two league draws to their name.

A trio of home league games are up next, with the hope that they will offer the opportunity Bassett need to finally get going.
