Royal Couple

In the second match of the double header, Witney Royals made it a double celebration with two well taken goals to stay top of the league and have Royal Wootton Bassett Town Over 50s looking over their shoulders at the bottom two beneath them.

The visitors almost got off to the perfect start. Sean Boyle in the home goal saved excellently from a good effort inside the 6 yard area on two minutes. Ian Mitchell then produced two superb tackles to snuff out Witney danger. Eddie Stephenson got in the act at the other end and his thirty-five yard effort had the 'keeper at full stretch to save.

Witney wrestled control of the game with two goals before the break. First a good through ball was finished into the bottom left hand corner, and a second followed when a ball in from the left was fired home by an unmarked forward in the area.

The second half was a different story with the visitors offering little goal threat and Bassett creating the better chances. Tim Lewis had a great curling effort go just wide of the top corner. However, it just wasn't Bassett's day, summed up when Stephenson played in a great ball only to see Mike Rouse head just over from close range.

Another encouraging Bassett display, but must be more clinical in both boxes if results are to improve.

Man of the Match: Ian Mitchell - a great defensive display punctuated with some superb tackles.
