Marlow's Double

Marlow Duke followed up their earlier success to achieve an identical winning margin in the second game of the double header against Royal Wootton Bassett Town Over 50s.

A completely fresh eleven for Bassett took on a Marlow outfit also utilizing their full squad. Bassett held their own in terms of goal chances but while they failed to register, their opponents were clinical with the few clear-cut chances they created.

After an even opening passage of play Marlow struck in the seventh minute. A deft chip from the edge of the area sailed straight over 'keeper Sean Boyle. Unfortunately, his mates had failed to inform him that they had lined his boots with lead in a pre-match prank.

Undeterred Bassett continued to press with wanabee international Ted Keep prominent. An audacious international class back heel was particularly memorable, but Steve Lynch's subsequent shot was dealt with by the Marlow number one.

Sean Boyle made a good block with his considerable frame to prevent further damage and Marlow led 1-0 at the interval.

Bassett created numerous chances to level after the break, notably involving burly Steve Fisher who sumo wrestled a defender to the floor before his shot was blocked and Kevin Currier who seemed to be in suspended animation when he dispossessed an increasingly cocky away 'keeper only to go walkabout in the area before politely handing back possession to the visitors. Steve Lynch also hit a good shot that the 'keeper clutched with a mixture of boredom and contempt.

The home side's generosity continued when a low ball into their box on 37 minutes was missed by everyone except a grateful Marlow player who tapped in at the far post to double their advantage. Bassett continued to look well in the contest but a moment of individual brilliance from a Marlow midfielder put an undeserved gloss on the final score line. He picked the ball up 35 yards out and after side stepping two statuesque defenders, he planted a firm drive into the bottom corner to put the icing on the Marlow cake.

What a thoroughly enjoyable day despite the losses. I know we are all desperate to win but the spirit and camaraderie in the squad are what it is all about. This will stand us in good stead as we continue on this exciting new adventure.

Man of the Match: Ted Keep - always available for a pass, a great engine when on the field, and worth an England place for the back heel alone.
