City comeback spells defeat for Ladies

Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, 9 May 2021

Despite racing into a 2-0 first half lead, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies fell to a 3-2 friendly defeat against Oxford City Women at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.

Bassett led through Hannah Gulliver, who, completing a swift, incisive counter attack, coolly slotted home after racing onto a Grace Eagles through ball.

Eagles then put the hosts 2-0 ahead, firing in on the turn after a towering Laura Jefferies free kick dropped to her in the box.

But Oxford would fight back, registering three times in a twenty minute second half spell to turn the game on its head.

Maisie Hastings rose highest to head home from Alisha Johnson's corner to halve their deficit.

Abbie Thorne then equalised with a cross-cum-shot from the right wing which sailed in over Alice Farnell.

The comeback was soon complete as Ellie White produced an assured finish after the Bassett defence were caught dithering.
