All tied at the top

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Ladies struck early against Bideford on their way to a 3-0 victory that takes them level on points with Callington Town at the top of the South West Regional Women's Football League Premier Division.

And, with a game in hand over the Cornish side, Bassett are in position to take sole possession of first place.

Bassett's route to victory was simpler than that against Bideford last week, when Jonny House and James Goddard's team came from behind to triumph 2-1.

This time they scored three unanswered first half goals, which would be all they required to take home the points from Devon.

A Laura Jefferies free kick that was deflected in off a Bideford defender gave Bassett an early lead in just the third minute.

The in-form Lauren Kayll doubled the visitors' advantage, scoring for the fourth game in a row as she slotted home on 18 minutes.

Leading scorer Hayley Huckin then grabbed what would prove to be the final goal of the game seven minutes before half time as she confidently rounded the 'keeper before stroking the ball into the net.

The second half was a reasonably quiet affair and, though Bassett were unable to add to their tally, 'keeper Alice Farnell was able to preserve the clean sheet.

After defeat to Callington in their opening league game, Bassett – in their first season in the South West Premier Division – have now won five on the bounce.

They now have a week off from league action as they focus their attention on their Wiltshire County Women's Cup quarter final against Melksham Town.
