Tricky away win to start the season

The season began with a tricky away tie at Highworth which after some tense periods of play the boys turned out a very good second half performance to take the 3 points.

We started OK working hard and stopping Highworth with Dave, Ollie and Adam at the back keeping any attacks at bay. In midfield, two of the new signings Ben Chin and Michael Gilder settling well alongside Nat, Jack Langcaster and Billy with new striker Dan Warre up front. Jacob Kimber also put it in a great performance, working up and down and getting some vital tackles in.

We took the lead after a neat pass from Billy to Ben Chin whose first touch beat the first defender and with some nice skill he went past the covering defender and then slotted the ball into the net. We could have made it two but a free kick went over the bar and then Billy side-footed a chance just wide.

But a second did follow when after a move on the left side saw another ball into the box from Billy which gave Dan a chance and he side-footed it into the corner.

This seemed to change the flow of play as we switched off expecting a free kick. Highworth didn't and hit a ball over the top to their attacker who was free and he neatly lobbed the ball over Dave to pull a goal back.

And we conceded again just before half time from a corner which we were slow to react to as Highworth did a well-practiced move with a pass to the edge of the box was played out to the back post and the same player was free for a tap in as we didn't pick him up.

So half time it was 2-2 and after some encouraging words the boys went out and put in a great second half performance. They all worked hard, were frustrated for periods but eventually got their rewards.

Nathaniel got his first goal of the season when he picked a loose ball up and drove forward towards the box and let fly with a shot that evaded the keeper and nestled into the net.

We could have let HIghworth back into it when a good through ball found the striker one on one with Dave but he spread himself and pushed the ball out to keep us in front.

The game was effectively decided when Dan scored his second. A lovely through ball from Billy gave Dan that yard he needed and he took his opportunity to shoot into the far corner.
