Leaders Shrewton stunned as Reserves stage another remarkable recovery

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves again overcame a two goal deficit as they recorded a stunning 5-4 victory against league leaders Shrewton United.

In a quite astonishing game of football at the Gerard Buxton Sport Ground, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves once again overcame a two goal deficit to defeat league leaders Shrewton United 5-4.

In doing so, Bassett also gained revenge for the heavy 6-1 defeat suffered in the reverse fixture in September.

Starting with a 3-5-2 formation, Bassett raced into a two goal lead through Carl Shepherd and Lewis Tidy only to then inexplicably concede three to give visitors Shrewton the lead at half time.

A head injury suffered by 'keeper Dave Groom then saw substitute Kyle Brooks don the gloves for the third time this season at the start of the second period.

Bassett's woes were compounded further when they conceded a fourth and then lost Dan Wernham to injury before the hour mark. Rich Clark replaced Wernham, and with Bassett switching to a 3-4-3 formation, they struck next through a brilliant solo effort from Jake Covey.

Moments later a great cross from Shepherd was volleyed in superbly by Steve Yeardley to level the scores and it wasn't much longer before an own goal gave Bassett the lead with ten minutes remaining.

Despite chances at both ends in the final minutes, none were taken meaning once again Bassett claimed points which at one stage looked very unlikely.

Three of the last five home games have seen Bassett recover from two goals down to get a result and, perhaps more impressively, they have been against higher placed sides. First they recovered to draw 2-2 with Melksham Town Reserves, before defeating reigning champions Malmesbury Victoria 5-2. Now they can add title contenders Shrewton to the list of sides who they have staged a brilliant comeback against.

Although there are obvious things to work on defensively, one thing that is very evident is the never say die attitude and great team spirit that has been instilled by management, which bodes well for the future.
