Walduck wondershow inspires thrilling comeback

A stunning comeback from Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves saw them defeat reigning Wiltshire League Premier Division champions Malmesbury Victoria 5-2.

In a pulsating game at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground, Royal Wootton Bassett Town Reserves overcame a two goal deficit against reigning Wiltshire League Premier Division champions Malmesbury Victoria to defeat them for the second time this season.

A scintillating last thirty minutes, inspired by deserved man of the match Scott Walduck, saw Bassett come from 2-0 down and score five times without reply to run out 5-2 winners .

Two strikes in the first hour saw Bassett behind. But following a tactical adjustment that allowed Walduck to play further up the pitch, Bassett were superb in every area. Martin Sinclair started the comeback with a great header from a Lewis Tidy free kick after Walduck was fouled and Sinclair grabbed the equaliser minutes later after yet another Walduck foray into the Malmesbury penalty area.

Bassett's tails were up and Walduck then broke free of his marker and as he rounded the Malmesbury keeper was tripped for a stonewall penalty and a subsequent sending off for the visitors' 'keeper. Steve Groom then kept his cool to fire home the spot kick to give Bassett the lead.

Moments later Walduck broke free again and this time deservedly got himself on the scoresheet before yet again destroying the opposition defence and squaring the ball to Ben Gerrish, who coolly finished to put the icing on a wonderful Bassett response.

Overall, it was a great team performance with Walduck deservedly taking the plaudits and also receiving a glowing compliment from the referee saying that he thought in the the last thirty minutes he was 'unplayable'.

It is also worth mentioning that five of the squad involved - Ben Gerrish, Shaun Terry, Scott Large and Steve and Dave Groom - were the sons of former Bassett players who successfully represented the club in the mid-1980s. Three of those former players - Dave Terry, Danny Groom and Paul Gerrish - are still involved with the club too as the Reserves and U18 managers, and it was pleasing to see this loyalty to the club still exists.
