18 Jan 2015 - Marlborough Youth (H)

Sunday 18th January, Ballards Ash, Wootton Bassett (Home)

Another home game, this time versus table-toppers Marlborough Youth. A beautifully sunny morning greets the teams with barely a cloud in the sky but it is very cold with a few remnants of overnight snow flurries in the shady spots.

Wootton Bassett struggle to get, and keep, any possession from the start as Marlborough pass well and are quick to the challenge, not giving the Whites any time to settle. A swift passing move goes down the Marlborough right before a cross comes in to the edge of the Bassett box. Zach throws himself at the ball to block the shot but the ball is deflected up and over Dans outstretched arms and into the back of the Bassett net to give Marlborough an early lead.

Bassett 0 – 1

Marlborough keep up the pressure on the Bassett defence, and keep the ball and the Whites are unable to keep the ball. Marlborough work the ball passed the Bassett defenders again and the attacker is through on goal but is out quickly and makes a fine stop at the feet of the attacker to prevent a second goal.

Wootton Bassett win a free-kick in their own half. Harry takes and lifts one towards the opponents corner where Kyle collects. Kyle beats a couple of challenges on his way to the edge of the box and makes room to take a shot but it is just wide.

A goal-kick from James is collected by Stan at halfway who then delivers a lovely ball through to Kyle travelling at pace who collects and, with a fantastic finish, shoots passed the diving Marlborough keeper , into the left-hand corner, to level the scores.

Bassett 1 – 1

Wootton Bassett are getting more into the game now and are making challenges further upfield, pushing Marlborough back. Tom collects the ball out on the right and lays one through to Kyle. Kyle beats a tackle and cuts inside to pass to Charlie who uses great skill to make some space for a shot, but it's well saved.

Bassett push up again and there is a great move in front of the Marlborough area. Tom on the right slips a tidy ball through to Kyle again, this time in space of his own, but again the Marlborough keeper makes a fine save.

Marlborough come backat Bassett again but Kieran gets stuck in and wins the ball back before a neat pass to Kyle. Kyle lays off to Tom who returns the ball as Kyle angles a run across the Marlborough box. Kyle takes it in his stride and whips in a left-foot curling shot which, this time, beats the Marlborough keeper but goes just wide of the top-left corner of the goal.

Half Time - Wootton Bassett Whites 1 Marlborough 1

Marlborough come out strong for the second half and the Whites are pushed back.

Zach breaks up an attack and plays a nice ball through to Kyle up ahead. Kyle turns nicely and passes to Sam who is looking to break through but he is well tackled. The ball comes back to Charlie who chips a cross across the Marlborough goal to Ryan but his shot is blocked and cleared by the defenders.

Jordan cleverly intercepts a Marlborough through ball and gives to Sam out left. Sam collects and moves the ball down the line to Kyle who provides a great long cross right across the face of the Marlborough goal but no-one can get a touch. Marlborough break down their left and are too quick for the Bassett midfield and defence who are pushed up. The attacker cuts inside and beats our defender and fires off a shot but Dan makes a fine save with his legs.

Wootton Bassett win a free-kick in their own half. Sam takes and gives to Charlie with space in midfield. Charlie moves forward and plays a great 1-2 with Brad to beat the defence before putting a through bal ahead of Kyle. Kyle just beats the keeper to the ball but the keeper does enough to get a block on the ball to deny him.

Marlborough put the Whites under pressure again for a spell but are unable to get any sight of goal. James picks up the ball deep in defence and moves the ball down the left flank. Stan takes it on and uses his speed to outpace the defenders but he is pushed out wide. He stops his run and cuts back to deliver a cross across the Marlborough box and finds Kieran in space who fires home for his first goal for Bassett.

Bassett 2 – 1

Marlborough pile on the pressure now and there are some niggly challenges coming in as Bassett look to frustrate their opponents. The Basset defence holds up as the minutes slowly tick by and a move starts down the left again. Tom collects on the left of midfield and plays through to Sam who works his way into the Marlborough area. Sam gets a shot away, even when surrounded by Marlborough defenders but the shot is saved.

Marlborough break back at speed down the same flank and the ball comes in to an attacker with space but Dan is a match for him and is out quickly to make a great stop
