15 Dec 2013 - Highworth Town Juniors 'C' (A)

Bassett started the match kicking up the significant slope and found it hard to get their game going immediately with the home side making strong runs that our defenders had to be alert to. Then a lovely through ball from Jamie nearly put Tom in and a similarly clever pass from Charlie almost did the same for Lewis, but the game stayed fairly even during these opening exchanges.

Then George picked up the ball in our half from a Dan short free-kick and dribbled forward, beating three players before sliding the ball across to Lewis who, clean through on goal, made no mistake to open our scoring: 1 - 0

Euan then took a free kick out on the left which was swallowed by the Highworth goalie before Ed had to show tremendous skill at the other end to snuff out an attack, turn inside his man and launch the ball forward. Moments later he caught the eye again as he made a last ditch tackle when a forward seemed nearly through on goal. Despite a number of further Bassett chances, including two lovely crosses from Tom that flashed across goal, the half ended with a narrow 1 goal lead from Bassett.

Half time: 1 - 0

Attacking downhill in the second half, our team looked a threat from the off and it wasn't long before Euan sent a ball out to Tom who was only denied by determined defending - then Euan sent a shot of his own just over the bar, but a second goal didn't quite come. Highworth then had a dangerous free-kick, but a strong shot couldn't beat Conor. Just after this, the move of the game was put together with Jamie, Charlie and Tom combining superbly down the right but Tom's shot was met with a great save.

Our dominance got its reward, however, when a defence splitting pass from Jamie put Tom in again and this time he beat the goalie with a strong ,accurate shot: 2 - 0 Charlie was unlucky not to get on the score sheet when his next shot was saved well by an increasingly busy home goalkeeper and then a lovely floated cross from George caused havoc in the opposition box , but the goalmouth scramble didn't come to anything. We should probably have scored at least another two during long periods of attacking pressure, but it was not to be and a deserved victory and clean sheet were duly recorded.

Final score: 2 - 0

Man of the match Although we carried a strong attacking threat today, there were some potential hairy moments at the other end when our two central defenders had to be alert and put in timely tackles. Prominent in this was today's man of the match, Edward Fish who barely put a foot wrong all game and launched some dangerous balls forward into the bargain.

Coach comment: A very professional performance by the lads & a clean sheet, which was the most pleasing thing as we worked hard to attain it.This was our 10th league fixture & the players can be very proud of how they've progressed since the start of the season & a Cup quarter final to look forward to in the New Year as well is a good reward for their efforts. If they can continue with the great team spirit & work ethic they show then the 2nd half of the season should be something to look forward to.A big thank you from the coaches to everyone & we wish you all a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.
