08 Dec 2013 - Highworth Town Juniors 'C' (H)

Back to near full strength and with new signing Kieran on the bench, Bassett looked a lot more confident as today's match got underway and it wasn't long before a lovely passing move tested our visitors and a free-kick was awarded just outside the area. Euan didn't beat the wall on this occasion but Highworth must have realised immediately that they were in for a difficult afternoon.

It was Highworth that had the next chance, though, a searching cross from the left finding a green shirt and a header just flashing wide. There followed a very even period of play with pressure from both sides before a second free-kick was awarded to Bassett and Callum calmly stepped up and sent a shot in at the near post that completely beat the 'keeper and nestled in the corner of the net: 1 - 0

This strike seemed to take the wind out of our opponent's sails and we enjoyed a period of further pressure, the lads starting to play some lovely football. Lewis powered through, riding several tackles before a second fee-kick was awarded and this time he stepped up himself to take it. The Highworth goalie must a have been kicking himself when a carbon copy kick from the same area was sent in the same trajectory with the same result - a goal for Bassett - this time from the foot of Lewis: 2 - 0

Highworth still had threat and it took a Dan sliding tackle and then a save from Conor to prevent them grabbing one back. It was Callum who created the next goal for us, however, when he slanted a ball crossfield to Tom, completely splitting the defence. Tom took the ball on strongly into the box and was felled by a desperate keeper giving the ref no option but to award a spot kick for Bassett. Tom , having earned it, stepped up to take the penalty and made no mistake to take the score to three : 3 - 0

To their credit, our visitors didn't flag and it wasn't long before they grabbed one back when a strong attack caused confusion in our defence and, after the initial attack wasn't cleared a player was left unmarked in the area and was able to easily slot the ball home: 3 - 1

Bassett came back strongly though and, after a Bassett corner caused complete confusion in the Highworth box , a great run from Dan through a number of tackles ended in a saved shot that came out to Jamie whose header only found the keeper's gloves.

Half time: 3 - 1

Highworth were still up for the fight and had an early free-kick that Conor saved well and then Bassett effectively put the game out of sight when a Tom cross found Callum in the box who deftly flicked the ball onto Jamie who cleverly glanced the ball home with his head: 4 - 1

Highworth had another chance and then Tom went on a mazy dribble almost the length of the pitch which was only snuffed out at the last minute. Then George (up in midfield now) went on a strong run of his own, holding his marker off very well before sending a ball into the box which went in off a Highworth defender for his first goal of the season :5 - 1

Highworth had time to fashion a second goal when their skilful number 11 powered down our left and turned the ball inside for a teammate who sent the ball into t he goal: 5 - 2

Final score: 5 - 2

Man of the match: The winner today is a defender who had a solid game all afternoon, ever running and eager and making good tackles and interceptions throughout the match. Today's man of the match is Zach Robinson.

Coach's comments: A good win by the lads who, although never at our best ,battled hard & scored 5 good goals against determined opponents. We again tried a different formation which the boys adapted to with positivity.Well done feller's!
