17 Nov 2013 - Old Town United Red (H)

A return to cup action after a week off although Bassett, back to full strength, seemed nevertheless to take a while to get going today. In fact, based on the first ten minutes or so, anyone predicting this final score would have raised some eyebrows. Old Town powered forward from the whistle and were in front before we'd had a chance to take breath. A strong run down the left saw the ball crossed dangerously and, with confusion in our ranks, an unmarked player was able to control and then shoot past a helpless Conor: 0 - 1

Old Town continued to dominate this game for at least another ten minutes with strong, willing players popping up all over the pitch and the ball remaining firmly in our half. The Bassett passing game just didn't have a chance to establish itself, although skilful defending from the likes of Dan, Ed and Callum was still keeping us afloat. Then, out of nowhere, a clever pass forward from George up to Charlie completely split the Old Town defence and he was able to put in a lovely ball to an on-running Joe who smashed the ball past their 'keeper to bring us level: 1 - 1

Old Town were not dispirited by this unexpected equaliser and they almost immediately grabbed back the lead with another strong attack, but this was now a different-looking Bassett and we started to finally play, showing great skill all over the pitch. Our second goal was a great team effort with Ed taking a free kick to Dan who , in turn, passed out to George who slid it into a gap for Jamie who cut it back to Lewis who slotted home to put us into an unlikely lead: 2 - 1

This rocked Old Town back a little and the whole balance of the game started to change, with our lads now starting to believe in themselves and it wasn't long before Bassett fashioned a third. This one was thanks to quick-thinking from Joe who flicked the ball through a high defensive line for Charlie who, like those before, took his chance beautifully to double our lead: 3 - 1

Old Town needed to score next to keep a toe in the game and, with two corners coming in quick succession they put us under some pressure but our lads cleared the danger well. A free-kick in a dangerous area was then awarded but a wayward shot flew harmlessly wide and we ended the half still with a two goal cushion.

Half-time: 3 - 1

At the start of the second half, Old Town came forward with purpose and Ben had to be sharp to cut out the threat, but it was soon opening up at the other end and it was Jamie who nearly snatched an early fourth goal when he launched a powerful shot that the goalie saved well, slamming into the post for his trouble.

Our fourth goal did come, though, when Zak headed the ball forward to Tom who burst forward with the ball and sent in a great cross that Charlie flicked home with aplomb: 4 - 1. Moments later, with Bassett now well on top, Tom was unlucky not to score himself when he kept the ball in well on the right and flashed the ball across the goal line just inches out. Now chances came in quick succession with the game now effectively over and Old Town looking beaten. A free-kick from Euan was then launched with pin-point accuracy and slotted home once again by Charlie to take the score to 5 - 1.

Shots and near misses from George, Euan, Jamie and Josh the followed before Lewis became the third player to score a brace when he battled through onto a bouncing ball to score neatly: 6 - 1

Old Town were to be given a consolation at the end when a free-kick was slammed through a rather porous wall to end the scoring at 6 - 2 but Bassett marched into the next round with this strong victory behind them.

Man of the match: On a day when we had to weather a lot of early pressure, one player stood out at the back today. Strong in the tackle, skilful in bringing the ball forward - today's award goes to a player starting to show great potential in a new position at the back- Daniel Hulse

Coach's comments The lads overcame a shock in the first minute to put in a real performance of self belief & maturity. They grew into the game, refused to panic & then their belief in themselves & their team mates ability to pass the ball proved to much for our committed opponents. All 6 goals came from good football & all 14 players can be very proud of their contribution to a hard fought victory.
