24 Nov 2013 - Wroughton Youth (H)

At the start of what was to prove a very difficult afternoon, Bassett nearly fell behind immediately when Conor tipped a powerful shot onto his bar. A Euan free-kick, moments later gave us sniff of a goal but our fired-up visitors were soon back at us and we fell behind after a corner was floated into the box and headed home: 0 - 1 Wroughton were battling for every ball, our lads just couldn't get their passing game going and , despite another moment of hope when Callum floated in a free-kick, we were soon two behind when a ball was launched forward for a strong attacker to run onto and fire into the goal: 0 - 2

Tom, for one, was determined to wrench back the advantage and he battled through down the right, only to see his shot well saved.Moments later Charlie nearly grabbed one back after Tom , once again, dribbled through and put him in on goal but his effort bounced back off the crossbar. This was now our best period of the game and further shots from Euan, then Charlie couldn't quite find their mark before a lovely cross field ball from Callum found Tom whose shot was again well saved. We began to think that this wasn't going to be our day and this was confirmed when an innocuous looking challenge by Conor on a Wroughton attacker led to a penalty that was despatched with ease to send us into half time three goals down.

Half-time: 0 - 3

Wroughton, tails still in the ' up' position, made an early chance that George managed to clear away from an open goal but this was clearly going to be an uphill battle. A free kick from Callum found Euan in the box , but his header just whistled wide and a Bassett corner soon caused a goalmouth scramble that was eventually cleared by Wroughton. Then a cruel blow followed when a snap shot found its way through and past a despairing Conor - the game was effectively over: 0 - 4

Dan,now up front , had a chance to get back a consolation but keen defending from a determined opposition snuffed him out. Then a sickening crunch as Euan went toe-to-toe with an attacker and had to be carried from the field - everything seemed to be against us now. To their credit, Bassett didn't give up trying for a goal but it wasn't to be and we ended the game with a rare blank score and a feeling we simply hadn't done ourselves justice.

Man of the match: One player never gave up today and was so close to creating a goal on a number of occasions that could have changed the course of the game. Today's man of the match goes to Tom Miller.

Coach's comments After a few very good performances & missing players from the squad, we were beaten by the better team on the day.We had a bright 15 minutes before half time & although we battled hard throughout the game there was no way back into the match.

Team: Callum Bridges, Euan Burke ,Jamie Byrom, Josh Curtis, Edward Fish (capt.) Lewis Cholod, Conor Chivers, Charlie Emmerson, Tom Miller, Daniel Hulse, Zach Robinson, George Staten
