Ladies Fade Late After Causing a Cup Scare

30 Sep 2012 - Southampton Women's (H)

Despite the final score reading 6-2 in favour of Southampton Women's FC, Wootton Bassett Town Ladies can be proud of their FA Women's Cup debut after frustrating their heavily favoured opponents for a large portion of the match.

It was only in the final half hour that the visitors were able to clinch the match and seal progress to the Second Qualifying round.

Bassett, playing a side three divisions above them, were able to match Southampton for long periods. Defending bravely, this allowed goals from April Polden and Katy Edwards to ensure the teams were locked at 2-2.

But with the home side's legs tiring, the Hampshire outfit were able to demonstrate their added class and added four goals without reply in the closing stages.

Despite falling at the first hurdle, it was a satisfying day for Bassett and their players. Their great play over the previous three seasons – with three consecutive runners-up finishes - has taken them to the top division of the Gloucestershire County League and enabled them to feature in a national competition.

If that progress continues, it hopefully won't be too many seasons before the team are claiming an historic first win and a cup run to savour.
