01 Oct 2011 - Larkhall Athletic (H)

In the middle of the October heatwave the girls took to the pitch. Wootton Bassett could only muster 9 girls for this match, against the other team who had at least one, if not more, substitutes. As the strips are so similar Larkhall wore their yellow bibs. Wootton Bassett also tried out a new goalie, Hannah Granger, and a different defence. Larkhall started with the upper hand and three minutes in scored from a corner. WBT goalie made at least three saves during this half & WB defence toughened up, especially under Amy Mathews. Larkhall were tackling and marking well and it was in the 17th minute that Rachel Buchanan followed in after a shot by Julia Cook. WB started to dominate play and made a number of shots at goal. Larkhall still had breaks that & threatened the 1-1 score line. About 24 minutes into the game, Jaye McGuigan, who had had a lot of the ball in mid-field, came off the field injured, but bravely returned to the match to keep Wootton Bassett from being a player down. Both teams continued to press but no more goals emerged and the first half ended 1-1.

The second half started with WBT just missing from a corner. From then on Bassett's midfield passed the ball up to Larkhall's end but although almost the entire team had a shooting attempts, Larkhall's goalie managed to make some great saves! Larkhall also continued to try and battle through the defence of Amy Mathews, Shannon Furey and Hannah Townsend. Although WBT seemed to have the upper-hand Hannah Granger made saves up until the end of the match. Eventually in the 63rd minute, Julia Cook cracked an effort in, from a lovely pass by Rachel Buchanan. Then ten minutes from the end of the game Julia sealed the match with a goal from a free kick Ellie Kaye passed to her. Wootton Bassett proved that they had stamina, with only nine players on that hot day and that the team is turning into a versatile squad, with members able to turn their hands to more than one position with success.
