Lavington No Match for Bassett Girls

24 Sep 2011 - Lavington Juniors (H)

The afternoon was warm and dry and it was the first home game of the season for Wootton Bassett. The game kicked off at 2pm and within the next minute or so Amy Matthews had managed to get through Lavington's defences and scored the first goal of Wootton Bassett's season. This was closely followed by Julia Cook, who strode through and scored Bassett's second goal. Other mid-field players tried their luck but it was Rachel Buchanan who scored twice 20 and 25 minutes into the game. Then very quickly Julia Cook scored her second goal. Lavington were not down-hearted they pressed our defence and had five corners during this half where there are always opportunities. Lavington caused Shannon Furey to make one good save and kept the defence team Amiee Menzies, Felicity Talbot and the newcomer Hannah Granger very busy. Wootton Bassett appeared to keep their formation this time and the flow of the ball from Wootton Bassett defence to mid-field had improved considerably and although not all the attempts from strikers and mid-field went into the back of the net, enough did to gain the advantage.

The second half got off to a flying start with Julia Cook completing a hat-trick by getting her third goal from a long kick. Still Lavington were not disheartened and fought back through Wootton Bassett's defence and scored a goal of their own. Katie Rea, who had had a few attempts in the first half, then found her mark 10 minutes into the second half and scored for Wootton Bassett. However, not to be outdone Lavington rallied and scored their second goal. Two minutes later Ellie Kaye powerfully kicked the ball long and low and scored Wootton Bassett's third goal in this half. Julia Cook then followed with another powerful kick of the ball, which did not rupture the goal post this time, but went in. Twenty seven minutes in to the second half and Jaye Mcguigan scored her goal. Then a hand-ball gave Wootton Bassett a penalty kick and Julia Cook took it. This time the Lavington goalie did a splendid save. However, Julia Cook then went on to score two more goals and although Lavington did not give up and kept up the pressure they were unable to score again. Although occasionally their mid-field was a little like a pin-ball machine, Wootton Bassett were getting more disciplined in holding their formation and passing to one another and finally getting the ball into the back of the net. Lavington worked tirelessly and they played a good game.
