Comeback for the Ages Sadly Not Enough

Sunday 3rd May 2009 - Greenmeadow 'A' (County Ground)

An outstanding comeback from Wootton Bassett Town couldn't prevent Greenmeadow 'A' from lifting the under 14 trophy as Connor Waldon thumped home from 25-yards in the final minute to give his side a 5-4 victory.

Bassett, unable to cope with their opponent's direct style of play, fell 4-1 down inside the opening twenty minutes.

Jack Allen got things rolling with two goals in the space of five minutes, both coming after superb right wing crosses from man of the match Waldon.

A 30 yard thunderbolt from Jack Brain halved the deficit, but Allen quickly replied to seal his hat trick, heading home from a corner after a fine save from Kitchin had denied Waldon.

An emphatic strike from Waldon flew into the top corner after a long goal kick caught the Bassett defence out to seemingly put the game away.

But Greenmeadow fell to pieces in the second half, allowing their opponents to get back in the game.

Brain scored from a free kick before Callum Little struck sweetly across Craig Hatherall into the bottom left corner following a Ben Nash flick on.

With quarter of an hour left the scores were levelled, Harry Hazzard popping up at the right hand post to head home after a deep free kick was redirected across goal.

With all the momentum in Bassett's favour, there appeared to be only one likely winner. However, Grant White spurned a chance to put his side ahead, heading inches over whilst unmarked from a perfectly placed Brain delivery.

Waldon then took full advantage of his opportunity to put his side ahead, but the game was not yet over.

In injury time, he found the post whilst one-on-one before a goal line clearance at the other end preserved the win.

Man of the Match: Callum Little – covered every blade of County Ground grass in the second half, playing an integral part in an outstanding comeback.
