Bassett Leave It Late to Maintain 100% Start to the Season

Sunday 14th September 2008 - Highworth Town Juniors 'H' (A)

We have had 3 games in a week now and today was probably the most satisfying win, the reason being is we all knew we were going to have a battle on our hands and to be fair we did, the team were put under pressure alot down the right wing and most of the 1st half the lads were getting the ball and kicking it away which then put more pressure on the back 4. When we did start passing, the team looked good and that did not happen that much in the 1st half, We had our chances today in the 1st 35 mins to be 2 or 3 up but for some shots just creeping wide and other times we just took the ball on that extra metre which led to their keeper closing down the space and saving and that made us feel uncomfortable as a team.

Half time came just after going 1 nil down in the last kick off the half and to be fair it was a welcolme break for us, as I could get in and talk to them and reorganise the troops and give them a nice talking to. 2nd half started and Highworth put an extra person into midfield to help them maintain their 1 nil scoreline but as a team we stuck to our guns and contiuned to press. It was not long before we started to see some of our trademark passing and it was by that our goal came about, the ball was passed around the pitch then John shot and the keeper parried the ball out for Jake to header the ball over the line, was it in or not, but to be fair the linesman gave it and that pulled it back to 1 all.

Team Bassett contiuned to press and trying to get that all important second goal but Highworth withstood the pressure and with 7 mins to go the ball came out to Nick who ran with it for 10 yards slipped a perfect weighted ball through to Liam who was in full flight and hit the ball hard and low to score our 2nd goal and making that 2 in 2 for him, phew!!!! You could hear the sighs of relief from the parents behind me. 2 mins later Bassett had a corner and Grant was waiting about 30 yards out and the ball came out to him, Grant controlled the ball and let fly the keeper dived and somehow went under him and make the scoreline 3 - 1 to Bassett also 2 in 2 for Grant.

Overall the game was not a pretty one, but you cannot play good football all the time and this was one of those occasions, the lads dug deep played some nice footall at times but did a sterling job in battling for the win.

Well done lads keep going.
