Milton just steal the honours

After the previous week's defeat at Headington, Bassett would have hoped to make amends in Saturday's top-of-the table clash. But unfortunately, it was not to be as a useful Milton side shaded it in what was 90 minutes of good and thoroughly entertaining football from both sides.

With neither team dominating the game, it swayed backwards and forwards in 10 to 15-minute spells with both goals under threat. The first 15 minutes, though, belonged to a very forceful Milton who, had their shooting been on target, could have gone one up. However, Bassett got their act together and gradually came back into the game. Pressing strongly, the next period of play was theirs. And they were rewarded in the 32nd minute after some sustained pressure. After winning a comer on the left, the cross came over with no defender picking up Wayne Taylor who headed into the corner of the net. The pressure continued and Moloney saw his 40th-minute header cleared off the line with Bunce beaten.

The second half started as the first had finished with both sides playing some good stuff and Bassett trying to go further ahead and Milton going for the equaliser. But the way Bassett's defence were playing, they were going to be hard pushed to get it. That was until the 63rd minute when a cross from the right to nobody in particular found Bassett's Justin Stephens. Unluckily, his cushioned header back to keeper Paul Stevens didn't find him, only the back of the net. It was then that both sides set about going for the winner, and it was from a Bassett attack that Milton's winner finally arrived. Milton defenders scrambled a cross away, only to the edge of the penalty area. Vincent's superb drive beat Bunce ends up, only for the shot to be headed off the line. Nevertheless, the resulting clearance found Andy Brown up front on his own and he ran through to beat Stevens with a low shot. In the remaining 10 minutes, Bassett piled on the pressure. One super cross by Clark found Vincent at the far post. With the angle so acute, he headed back across goal, but no Bassett forward could get a touch on the ball and it was scrambled clear. So, Milton won a game that could have gone either way.
