Bassett off with a bang

A resounding 3-0 win on Saturday was exactly the kind of start Bassett wanted at the beginning of a new season. It was an especially appropriate result with the new chairman, Mike Farrow of Swindon Computing Services - the club's new sponsors - in attendance and a change of management with Kevin Moloney taking over from Mick Woolford and Dave Hawkins as his assistant.

In a bone-hard pitch, the grass the colour of sand, Bassett started off well, playing some good one-touch football to feet. They also controlled the ball well on this pitch and for long periods had Saras with their backs to the wall. Bassett keeper Paul Stevens had only one difficult moment when he had to punch clear on a one to one with Powell. But for all their domination no goals resulted in the first half when a 2-0 might well have flattered Saras.

Bassett started the second half but, as in the first, some good keeping by Morris kept Bassett at bay. That was until the 51st minute when Bassett won a corner taken by Rick Casey. His kick was met by Maloney who headed into the roof of the net - just the tonic Bassett wanted. They continued with the pressure, although on 65 minutes, Shatford nearly equalised. On a rare attack, Saras won a free kick and Shatford's drive brought a superb save from Stevens. Then it was all Bassett again. On 75 minutes, a low cross from Kevin Roberts saw Casey and a defender go for the ball, but Casey won the challenge to turn it into the net. On 84 minutes, Casey wrapped up the game for Bassett. A good ball out found Wayne Taylor free on the left. His superb cross was met by Casey who, with Morris stranded, headed into the top left-hand corner.
