Always on top

Bassett kept up the unbeaten run with a fine and deserved victory over Yarnton, though despite playing the better football they still seemed to make hard work of taking goal chances.

Although Williams in the Yarnton goal made two or three good saves, and Casey scraped a post with the keeper well beaten, Wright in the centre of Yarnton's defence also had a good first half, cutting out many crosses that Williams could not get to.

The first half ended goalless but it was a different story in the second half. It was only four minutes old when Wright headed off the line with Williams stranded. Bassett started to carve holes in the Yarnton defence. On 66 minutes Vincent was substituted for Shaun Clark, and on 68 minutes Clark scored with his third touch of the ball. The first to control the through ball, his second to round Williams and third to hit the roof of the net.

Yarnton then came out and maybe could have got an equaliser had their shooting not been so erratic. However, Bassett's defence stood firm and broke up most of Yarnton's attacks.

Meanwhile, Richard Casey had been brought down with only the keeper to beat earning Yarnton their third yellow card. Neil Timbrell had a superb header from the edge of the box tipped over the bar and on 89 minutes Richard Casey got number two. Barry Giles's lovely flick to David Guthrie took out two defenders, Guthrie's superb defence splitting ball found Richard Casey who slide the ball under Williams for the match clincher.
