Subsidiary Cup Goes to Bassett

Wootton Bassett gained some solace for being pipped in the race for the championship of Division 2 of the Wiltshire County League when they beat Avebury 4-1 in the final of the section's Subsidiary Cup on Saturday.

Neither team was at full strength. Avebury's Paul Rideout was among the absentees because he had been picked for England Boys against Scotland at Newcastle.

Both sides missed chances in the first half which the only goal was one against his own side by Avebury's Martin Blackler.

Gary Dixon beat Avebury's offside trap to score Bassett's second goal in the 70th minute. Six minutes later Dixon ran through on his own to score again, but Nathan Walker replied for Avebury with a shot off the underside of the Bassett crossbar after a brilliant solo run.

Dixon completed his hat-trick from a centre by Steve Hatchman in the 85th minute.

Mr Don Paget, of the Wilts FA, presented the cup to the winners.
