Bromham provide surprise in Cup

The Evening Advertiser, Monday October 3rd 1960

One of the major surprises in the FA Amateur Cup competition on Saturday was the 2-1 defeat of Wootton Bassett Town at Bromham.

Wootton Bassett, leaders of the Wiltshire Premier League, had whipped Swindon Victoria 5-0 in the previous round. In recent weeks they had also completed a double at the expense of Swindon Town "A" beating them 5-0 at Wootton Bassett and 4-2 in Swindon.

A penalty taken by Webb gave Bromham an interval lead, and in the second half Lane got a second for the home side and Teetgen replied for Wootton Bassett.

Wootton Bassett found it tough going when they visited Bromham for an FA Amateur Cup-tie this afternoon. They trailed 1-0 at the interval, Bromham having scored from the spot.

The opening stages of the game were even with both sides testing the goalkeepers. Paget saved a certain goal when he cleared from the goal line.

From a good forward movement Smith was unlucky not to score when his shot was deflected over the bar by Curtis.

Bromham scored from a penalty in the 26th minute through Webb.

Wootton Bassett should have equalised but in a goalmouth scramble Hillier made a brilliant save.

Bromham were awarded a free-kick in the last minute and were unlucky not to score when the shot skimmed the upright.

Lane scored for Bromham in the second half, and Teetgen for Wootton Bassett.

Wootton Bassett had won at Swindon Victoria by the big score of 5-0 in the previous round so were not unduly disturbed by their task. They soon realised, however, that this game was not going to be easy for them as Bromham held them and at the same time gained confidence. A penalty mid-way through the first half gave Bromham's Stan Webb the chance to put his side ahead and he made no mistake.

Then after both goals had survived some hectic periods of pressure, Bromham went further ahead through Frank Lane from a good pass headed over by young Monty Smith. Shortly afterwards Peter Teetgen scored the Wootton Bassett goal and a grand finish to this exciting game was then ensured but Bromham held out and so qualified to receive Clandown in the first round next Saturday.

Surprise result of the Amateur Cup-ties last Saturday, was the 2-1 defeat of the Wiltshire Premier League leaders, Wootton Bassett, at Bromham.

Wootton Bassett, who had just completed a double over Swindon Town 'A' and had gained a 5-0 victory over the Wiltshire League leaders, Swindon Victoria, in the previous round, had to bow their heads to a team whom the Vics had already defeated once this season.
