Marlborough’s long-range shooting too good for Bassett

In what will probably be one of Royal Wootton Bassett Town Under 12 Girls' toughest games of the season agaist one of the title favorites Marlborough Youth Tigers, Bassett were undone from long range.

As expected, Marlborough started strongly only to find a Bassett team up for the challenge, with every girl battling for every ball. The back line of Poppy Henderson and Annabel Wellsbury were both in inspired form reducing Marlborough to a handful of early chances.

When Marlborough did get past the Bassett defence, they found Sophie Saunders in goal in top form with some brilliant early saves. Bassett rarely threatened in the early stages with Daisy Bundy and Bethany Humphrey unable to get the better of the Marlborough defence.

Captain for the game Sienna Badman along with midfield partner Robyn Spencer worked hard off the ball closing space. Leah Jefferies received a ball to the face showing the team's willingness to get bodies in the way of shots. Bassett's best opportunity fell to Ruby Gower, but she was unable to get her shot away before being closed down.

Bassett sent on Holly Wannell and Evelyn Lee-Gerrish to freshen up the midfield. Marlborough's first goal came in the 21st minute with a shot from long-range finding the net. Two more long range goals followed quickly before half time.

Into the second half Marlborough took full charge of the game as Bassett started to tire due to the amount of running and effort they had already put in. Bassett's defence was still under extreme pressure and a few last-ditch tackles from Jess Watkinson and Annabel Wellsbury helped keep Marlborough out.

Eventually the pressure did pay off and Marlborough added two more goals from long range. Then with Bassett's coach's keen to give all the girls a run in the final fifteen minutes, Marlborough added a further three quickfire goals to extend their lead to 8-0.

But to the Bassett girls' credit, they never gave up and only a good save from the Marlborough keeper stopped Bethany Humphrey from scoring a late consolation goal tht the team's hard work deserved.

Player of the match for Bassett was in form goalkeeper Sophie Saunders, whose saves kept Marlborough frustrated at times.
