Ruff time for the Old Dogs

The final instalment in the Vets Super Sunday saw the senior veteran team of Over 50s beaten 7-2 by Chippenham Yard Dogs. A bumper crowd enjoyed the spectacle, as most of their grandchildren were in the stands!

The Vets never really got into their stride, with their opponents bolstered by a couple of younger members, giving them an advantage in the legs department. Yard-Dogs took an early lead and never looked like being caught. Each Yard-Dogs attack seemed to catch Bassett short on numbers and by half-time the lead was 4-0, with a few long-range shots all the home side had to show.

In the second half, the Vets made a much better fist of it with the right sided triumvirate of Boyle, Rouse and Keep producing some intricate moves, despite sounding like a Victorian haberdashery store. Yeardley and Wood looked both calm and composed in the face of the onslaught, having lost sweeper Groom early to the tweaked groin. Soon after half time, Vets' first goal came from a beautiful Kev Currier cross that Lav Cena nimbly rose and headed in like a young salmon, belying his 55 years.

Martyn Purcell and Jason Parr were gaining a foothold in midfield and Vets looked to have overrun the opposition, almost as if they had twelve men on the pitch! Ted Keep was everywhere, proving how hard it is to tell someone who can't hear you where he should be! Tony Gleed provided the glue allowing Mitchell, Lang and Kenny Campbell to roam the pastures.

On 75 minutes, more fine right-sided work, this time involving Tony Skeates, saw Mike Rouse through in the area and able to toe-end mesmerically past the keeper at the near post for a second Vets goal.

There was time for Skeates to head in from 4 yards after a great cross from Steve Lang. Unfortunately he closed his eyes and the chance went wide which saw him unceremoniously hauled off, rather harshly but well worth the Pink Pony award.

Yard-Dogs had added another three to their tally in the second half, possibly more, but hey…who's counting?

It was a tough 90 minutes but testament to the spirit and togetherness of the Vets group with a squad of sixteen fifty and sixty year olds ready and able to perform.

Man of the match was awarded to Paul Boys Stones, who probably kept the score down in his second game of the day!
