Vets off the Boyle

The first fixture in the Winter Vets league ended in defeat for Royal Wootton Bassett Town in a fast-paced competitive fixture, on the 4G pitch at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground.

The Vets were looking to make a strong start to the hour-long fixtures but Marlborough proved to be well organised and more composed on the ball. Keeper Sean Boyle had made several good saves to keep the scores level and Bassett were also indebted to a Nick Warren clearance off the line as Marlborough exerted most of the pressure in the first half.

Bassett, although seeing a good amount of the ball, were unable to keep hold of it long enough to create any clear-cut chances and towards the end of the half Marlborough were in front. The Vets looked to have held firm at the back as Marlborough over-played a through ball from the 18-yard line. Unfortunately, in rushing out to collect, keeper Boyle took his eye of the ball, allowing it to run underneath him and the forward to stroke into an empty net.

It was a blow to go in 1-0 down for tea and crumpets at half time as Bassett had battled well and repelled most attacks. The second half continued at a furious pace, causing rested midfield general Bryan Wood to comment on it being a lot easier to watch. Bassett's problem was being unable to release the pacey Steve Shaw and Dave Parker, or link effectively to create any concerted pressure.

Marlborough went 2-0 up midway through the second half. A swirling cross from the right was lost in the floodlights by Boyle causing a David James style flap. The ball fell invitingly into the path of an onrushing forward who again obliged.

The Vets rolled the substitutions and brought on the prolific Paul Jack, but in defence. Their best chances came from a thumping Parker drive that clipped the crossbar, maybe even having been turned over by the keeper.

This was a strong game first up and the boys will look to bounce back in their next fixture, Monday 11th December 9pm against Hardly Athletic, who were beaten 4-1 by Malmesbury in their opening game.

Man of the match goes to Paul Davis, because thats what used to happen in the old days!
