Reserves seal top three finish in style

03 May 2014 - Beversbrook (A)

Finishing a hugely successful season in style, a convincing 4-1 victory against Beversbrook in their final game of the season saw Wootton Bassett Town Reserves clinch a third place in Hellenic League Division Two West.

Goals from Lee Smith, Rich Clark, Shaun Terry and Ben Brown did the trick for Simon Paish's team, who achieved by far the best finish for Bassett's second string since the undefeated Reserves Division Two title winners of 2000-01.

Bassett lost just four leagues games all season, with just one defeat since December. That was against Oxford City Nomads Development in March, a result that looked as though it would end hopes of reaching third. However, Bassett bounced back brilliantly, defeating Hook Norton 1-0 in a vital away game before going onto record three more wins and a 2-2 draw against Fairford Town in which they twice came from behind.

On top of that league success was a deep run in the President's Cup that was cruelly, agonisingly ended in a semi final penalty shootout against Bracknell Town.

To their credit the team did not let the sense of disappointment stemming from that loss linger. Continuing to play attractive football, and with an outstanding spirit within the team, third is a prize they greatly deserve.
