Ladies Leap Into Runners-up Spot

19 Apr 2012 - Cirencester Town Reserves (H)

Wootton Bassett Town Ladies secured runners-up spot in Gloucestershire County League Division Two in impressive fashion after triumphing 9-1 against Cirencester Town Reserves under the Rylands Way floodlights.

Top scorer April Polden shone as she fired home five goals, while Elsie Sims, Madeline Elliott, Katy Edwards and Megan Tidy added gloss to the scoreline, which was more than enough to seal the three points needed to jump into second place.

Only in existence for three seasons, it is nevertheless the third time the Ladies have finished league runners-up. However, this year was the first time they did so in Division Two.

A fortnight ago it seemed as though the Ladies would be forced to settle for a top four finish after a frustrating 4-4 draw at home against midtable SCS. That result meant six points were needed from their final two games in order to take second spot. With an away trip to champions Quedgeley Wanderers in their penultimate fixture, it appeared a long shot.

But a stunning 5-3 victory on Sunday against the title winners - thanks to a Polden brace and goals from Edwards, Elliott and Sims - altered matters dramatically.

And with the momentum from that victory, there was going to be little Cirencester could do to prevent the Ladies snatching the silver medal position.
