Bassett lose high scoring game with Ferndale Rodbourne

We arrived at Ferndale with excitement and looking forward to our first proper competitive match. All the waiting was over, the boys were all wearing their brand new track suit tops and new kit.

We lost the toss and FR C decided to change ends, kicking slightly downhill with the wind. During the first few minutes we certainly matched FR and had a lot of possession in the FR half. However after 5 minutes we were a goal down, a long ball over the top of Aaron and Chezzles let in the FR striker who finished very well into the corner, giving Jack no chance. We continued to battle for the ball in midfield with Charlie and Roo working very hard to compete with the battle in midfield. The FR striker was very strong when he was in possession of the ball however Aaron and Chezzles were determined to not let the striker get the better of them. Particularly Aaron who made some very strong and determined tackles.

When James had possession of the ball he tried to move the ball forward to Kris who was trying hard to find space, however FR had two players back most of the time and it was difficult for us to keep the ball. We did have a couple of half chances and I thought we had a good shout for a penalty when (James or Kris can't remember) got brought down in the area, but the referee decided to give a corner. FR did have a couple of one on one chances which Jack managed to come out and clear the danger. With approximately 20 minutes gone we won a corner and Charlie crossed the ball which was headed home by Aaron. A great finish.

Almost straight the after the re-start FR pushed forward and the bouncing ball was not dealt with again and FR were ahead again. Half time 2-1 down.

During the first half we certainly matched FR in all departments, but we were very disappointing when in possession of the ball. We didn't look to control the ball and pass. At half time we asked the boys to hold the ball, look up and pass and we made a change bringing on Jemil for James.

In the second half we continued to battle for possession and did start to pass the ball to each other. However within a short space of time we let in another two goals and were 4-1 down.

We brought on Tom who took a couple of FR defenders on and passed the ball through to Charlie who just couldn't reach it and the FR goalie managed to clear the danger. Again Tom was holding the ball on the area but was fouled. The resulting free kick was taken by Charlie, who struck the ball very well and went into the corner of the FR goal. Again we continued to press forward and we were awarded another free kick slightly further out which Andrew took and blasted the ball into the top corner. 4-3. With only 2 minutes to go could we go on and grab a draw????

It wasn't to be, we conceded a corner and somehow FR scored directly from it. 5-3.

Tony and myself were very disappointed in the way the boys didn't hold the ball and look to keep possession. However on a very positive note we battled very well in all aspects and never gave up. If we continue with the same attitude for the rest of the season we will do very well.

The Man of the Match award was very close between Charlie Skeates and Aaron Fry. However with some great tackling and defending this weeks MOM is Aaron.

Footnote

We played the A team on Wednesday and both Tony and myself were both extremely delighted with how all the players performed. Both teams in the first half gave players an opportunity to play in different positions. However second half both teams put their players in their usual positions. We certainly played some great football and were very determined. The final score 3-3 which was a very well deserved draw for the C team. In fact had it not been for the referee (me) allowing another 5 minutes we would have won 3-2.

If we play like this every week we will certainly win more than we lose and will finish near the top of the league. Well Done.
