Good win away at Letcombe

Bassett started the game brightly on a very heavy pitch and were able to contain the home side with comparative ease. For the first 10 minutes Bassett controlled the game but then lapsed into a period of about 15 minutes which allowed Letcombe to come more into the game and two good saves by Tom Fuller prevented the home side taking the lead. After 35 minutes a good ball from skipper Davis in defence found Jeremy Newton wide on the left. Newton took on the Letcombe defence and fired a fierce shot goalward. With the aid of a deflection from a Letcombe defender the ball found its way into the net. This brought Bassett to life and five minutes later a corner from Goodwin was played back to him by Machell and the resultant cross was met by Machell who headed the ball in to give Bassett a 2-0 lead.

The second half started with Letcombe taking the initiative and after 63 minutes Paul Bedwell pulled a goal back even though Fuller managed to get a hand to the shot. On 75 minutes Goodwin was brought down in the penalty area and Paul Harper converted the resultant spot kick to give Bassett a 3-1 lead. An excellent result for Bassett who apart from a shaky 15-minute spell in the first half, worked very hard on a pitch that was not conducive to good football and they were well worth the 3 points which keeps them in contention with the league leading teams.
