Bassett lose to Forest Green Rovers Res for 2nd time this season

It was a return to action on Saturday after two weeks for Wootton Bassett Town with a visit to Forest Green Rovers Reserves. Bassett still smarting from a cup exit at the hands of Forest Green started the game in lively fashion and nearly scored after 9 minutes when a well-directed pass from Micky Goodwin found Lee Stoddart on the edge of the Forest Green penalty area, but Lee's well-placed shot was expertly saved by Richard King in the Forest Green goal. Both sides settled down to playing some good attacking football with no one looking likely to score. With 6 minutes of the first half remaining a defensive mix up gave Richard Davis for Forest Green the chance to lob the ball over Neil Twine to give the home side the lead.

The second half continued in much the same way as the first with both sides playing some good attacking football. With only 9 minutes of the second half gone one of the numerous attacks mounted by Bassett saw debut boy Philip Penning strike the upright with the keeper well beaten. Jeremy Newton was alert enough to be following in and managed to fire the ball into the net to level the scores. The game still moving from end to end saw some very creative football but neither side really looking like scoring until the 23rd minute when the ball was played to Forest Green striker Richard Davis who fired ani unstoppable drive into the top right-hand corner of the goal. A superb strike which left Neil Twine rooted to the spot.

Bassett, with their newly found will to win, rolled up their sleeves and continued to attack the Forest Green goal and their persistence paid off with 7 minutes of the game remaining when Simon Green managed to prod the ball home to once again level the scores. With the game almost at its conclusion, Forest Green were awarded a corner and the well flighted place kick was met by the Forest Green captain Simon Ward who headed the ball into the net to once again give the home side the lead.

That's twice that Forest Green have beaten Bassett this season and on both occasions only by the odd goal. There is very little between these two teams who both play some very attractive football and Bassett should not be disheartened by this defeat which comes on the back of a run of very good results, they must take out the positives of which there were many and with just a bit of luck by the end of the season they should be near the top of the table if this week's performance is anything to go by.
