Purton gain third win in a row

Purton gained their third win in a row when they visited neighbours Wootton Bassett Town and never looked back after getting an early lead. Purton welcomed back flu victim Paul Gibbons for this game on December 23 but were without Peter Snowball and Ian Howell. With the exception of a 10-minute spell early in the second half, Purton always looked likely winners. They might have taken the lead after two minutes when Justin Stephens was fouled in the box and an indirect free-kick only was given instead of the spot-kick. Purton got off to a sixth minute lead, however, when Steve Paish started the move with a ball up the right to Peter Hammond. His cross was chested back by Mark Collier for Mark Gardner to shoot past the 'keeper. Five minutes later Purton were 2-0 up and Steve Paish again sent Neil Holmes away on the right and his great cross was headed in from close range by Peter Hammond.

Within a minute of the second half, Bassett pulled a goal back. Colin Valters got by Jones on the right and his cross was headed in at the far post by Daimon York. Peter Hammond had a shot cleared off the line and Tim Mills had two 20 yarders saved by the keeper before Purton's keeper John Miles, made a great 80th minute save from Frost, diving to his right. In the final seven minutes Purton forced five corners and Bassett defenders defended desperately.
