Draw a fair result in the end in local derby game

This local derby game played last Saturday at the Red House saw the visitors take the lead, fall behind and then level the scores in a typical derby encounter, played on heavy conditions and with the rain lashing down in the second half.

A late header by Paul Gibbons was rubbed out by the referee and Mark Collier hit the bar in the 89th minute but all in all, the 2-2 result was probably justified in the end as Bassett missed a couple of sitters that could have given them the three points.

In a one sided first half, Bassett took the lead when Colin Valters raced through to net after 27 minutes.

Purton dominated the second half but Bassett were dangerous on the break. Steve Paish, after a series of great work on the right, centred perfectly for Steve Kelly to equalise on 62 minutes and within 90 seconds Purton were 2-1 up when Steve Paish, who had a great match, sent a 25-yard free kick whistling into the Bassett net.

Five minutes later, great work by Hammond saw his shot saved, then a defensive error let in Colin Valters to equalise after 75 minutes. Paul Gibbons robbed of a goal and Mark Colliers effort that hit the bar may have given Purton all the points but a 2-2 draw was a fair ending in the circumstances.
