Youth team's great win in extra time of cup final

Sunday's Mid-Wilts Youth League Cup Final at Melksham Town Ground crowned a remarkable first season for Wootton Bassett Football Club's youth team.

In a suspense-filled final against Division1 runners-up Ludgershall, Gary Giles scored the winning goal in the first period of extra time on Sunday, to make the final score 3-2.

First goal was scored by John Freeth (Wootton Bassett) fairly early in the first half and at half-time the score was 1-0. Ludgershall equalised about ten minutes into the second half and Gary Giles (substitute for Mark Fairbanks, injured in a collision after half time) scored Wootton Bassett's second goal. Within about ten minutes of the final whistle, Ludgershall scored again, and the game moved into extra time.

Giles scored the winning goal within about four minutes. The team managed by Glyn Lewis, includes David Alstowe (captain), Mark Lewis (goal), Michael Pell, Mark Fairbanks, Andrew Ferguson, Michael Bagg, Graham Large, John Freeth, Robin Harrison, Mark Smedley, Graham Smedley and substitutes Graham Faulkner and Gary Giles.
