Mixed Fortunes for Swindon in Amateur Cup

The Evening Advertiser, Monday October 12th 1964

Swindon Youth Centre teams had mixed fortunes in the FA Amateur Cup on Saturday. Ferndale won 2-1 at Wootton Bassett but Westcott were crushed 11-1 at Shepton Mallet.

The Football Pink, Saturday October 17th 1964

Ferndale Youth Centre and Marlborough Town, the two Wiltshire League clubs left in the FA Amateur Cup from last Saturday's round did themselves and their League proud. Ferndale won 2-1 at Wootton Bassett and Marlborough held Warminster Town to a 2-2 draw, Warminster earning a replay this afternoon with a late goal.

Both Ferndale goals were scored by Basil Fitchett and both came well before Benny Lehane scored Wootton Bassett's.

The first goal was a typical Ferndale goal move with the ball moving from Barry Sheppard to Alan Harvey, on to Dave Moss and across for Fitchett to finish off with a power drive from twenty five yards.

The second was a through pass down the middle nodded on by Dave Moss to the scorer in the second half.

Saved By Bar

Ferndale were well on top after that and both Dave Moss and Mike Hudd hit the Wootton Bassett crossbar and it was not until the last ten minutes that Wootton Bassett were stung into heavy retaliation.

It was then that they reduced their arrears when Dave Gray was lured from his goal and Benny Lehane cleverly stabbed the ball into goal with the back of his heel.
