Bassett cause a shock against Westbury

Shock of the day in the Wiltshire Premier League last Saturday was the 3-2 defeat of Westbury on their own ground by Wootton Bassett, for a week earlier United had gained their finest win of the season at Stonehouse. Defeat, too, came after they had established a 2-0 lead in 15 minutes.

Westbury seemed to be going on from where they left off when Les Davidge scored for them after three minutes. Twelve minutes later he scored a second goal and Westbury were so much on top that the fact that they were missing golden opportunities did not seem to matter.

Davidge was guilty of some of those misses, and so was Ed Murphy. Praise, however, must go to Wootton Bassett's defence. With Dennis Cook solid in the middle and Dave Jones safe in goal Wootton Bassett stuck to their task extremely well throughout this period of heavy pressure.

Then came the first inkling of the impending shock in store for Westbury for Terry Gardiner made a quick dash forward for Will Stevens to score.

Encouraged by that success and some more Westbury misses Wootton Bassett shook Westbury by equalising through Lamb near the interval.

There was nothing between the teams after that. Gone was Westbury's earlier supremacy – Lamb scored the winning goal.
