Wootton Bassett Keep It Up – Victory at Calne in Amateur C

The Football Pink, Saturday 2nd October 1937

The good form shown by Wootton Bassett at Boscombe Down, when the Airmen were held to a draw in a Wiltshire League match was maintained last Saturday when they visited Calne & Harris's in the preliminary round of the Amateur Cup.

Extra time was necessary before Calne were beaten by four goals to two.

One of the outstanding players in the Town's team was Beazley, who was included at the last minute to fill the centre-forward position, owing to the non-arrival of Spraggs.

Beazley celebrated his inclusion by performing the "hat-trick". Embling obtained the other. At the end of ninety minutes the score was 2-2.

During the extra period Calne lost the services of their centre-half through an injury. Thus the Town qualified to visit the Devizes Mental Hospital side next Saturday.

The defences predominated in the match between Calne and Wootton Bassett, played at Calne this afternoon, in the preliminary round of the FA Amateur Cup. Neither team could make headway until just before half-time, when some fine passing between Goddard and Powell enabled the latter to drive the ball past Waite in the visitor's goal.

In the opening few minutes Pearce had hard lines for the visitors when he shot over the bar, and just afterwards Brown was equally unlucky. In the return attack Powell brought Waite to his knees to save a hard drive from close in. Winter, in the Calne goal, punched away a good shot from Parry, the visiting outside-right, and Langley had hard lines with a shot which went just wide of the upright for Calne.

The crowd had a thrill when Parry drove the ball straight at the upright when Winter had been drawn out of goal.

In the second half Goddard netted for Calne and Beazley twice registered for Wootton Bassett, the scores being level at full time.
